What Is a Panic Bar?
A panic bar โ also called an exit device, crash bar, or push bar โ is designed to allow emergency egress with a single push motion. Unlike a door knob, it requires no grasping or twisting โ critical for rapid evacuation. NFPA 101 and IBC govern where they're required.
When Is a Panic Bar Required in DC?
Required by DC Building Code on exit doors serving assembly occupancies with 50+ occupants, all exit doors in educational occupancies, and all Group H hazardous occupancy exits. Even where not strictly required, panic hardware is strongly recommended for liability protection.
