What NFPA 80 Requires
NFPA 80 Section 5.2 requires annual inspection of fire door assemblies by someone with knowledge of the standard. Inspections must be documented, deficiencies corrected, and records retained. The inspection covers: labels (must be visible and legible), clearances (max 1/8" at edges, 3/4" at bottom), hardware function, self-closing and latching, seals, coordinators, and vision panels.
Most Common Violations
- Door closer failing to close and latch fully โ most common and easily fixed
- Worn or missing smoke gaskets โ dry out and crack over time
- Non-listed hardware modifications โ previous tenants added non-rated hardware
- Missing coordinator on paired doors
- Clearance violations โ door has been rehung incorrectly
- Obstructed or missing fire rating label
